What you need to know about e-bike security and how to best secure it

Understanding the specific risks of e-bike theft

Theft: why are e-bikes targeted?

Bicycle theft is nothing new; it was already an issue with classic models. A bicycle remains a practical, lightweight, and sometimes expensive mode of transport depending on the chosen range. Now imagine adding electric assistance. With the arrival of e-bikes, the game has changed.

These models, which are on average more expensive than traditional bicycles, attract more covetousness. They are more practical, require less effort to use, and often include detachable components, such as the battery, which can be resold separately: a boon for thieves.

That's why reinforcing the security of your e-bike has become essential. A good lock, thoughtful parking, and a few simple precautions can truly make a difference if you want to avoid having it stolen.

Understanding general e-bike safety risks: dangers, incidents, prevention

Accidents related to electric assistance: speed, braking, visibility

Electric assistance makes rides much smoother, but it can also create a false sense of security that we sometimes tend to overlook. Many people underestimate the power of an e-bike. The problem is that reaching 25 km/h effortlessly completely changes how you react on the road.

On one hand, speed amplifies risks, especially in urban environments. At this pace, braking distances increase, and reaction time must be shorter. A pedestrian crossing without looking or a car door suddenly opening are things that happen more often than we think and can quickly become dangerous if not anticipated. The reflex is therefore to adapt your speed to the context, even if the assistance encourages you to accelerate.

On the other hand, braking also requires more vigilance. The weight of the e-bike (often between 20 and 30 kg) makes sudden braking a bit more difficult to control than a classic bike.

Finally, visibility remains a key factor. Many accidents happen simply because the cyclist was not seen. Powerful front and rear lights, a reflective vest, and light-colored or reflective clothing can truly make a difference, even in broad daylight.

In short, safety does not solely depend on respecting traffic laws: it relies on simple and consistent actions to compensate for the speed and weight of the e-bike.

Mechanical breakdown or failure: a still too often ignored source of danger

When we talk about safety, we rarely think of breakdowns. However, a mechanical failure can be just as risky as a traffic accident or theft. Worn brakes, a poorly tensioned chain, or a defective battery can lead to a sudden loss of control.

The problem is that an e-bike requires more regular maintenance than a classic bicycle. Why? Because the components are more heavily used. So ignoring an unusual noise, a loose cable, or a loss of power also means risking a breakdown in traffic, and in those moments, the danger becomes very real.

Some points to check regularly:

  • Brakes and cables

  • Transmission

  • Battery and motor

  • Tires

Performing a full check at least with each change of season can be a good idea. Some specialized stores or websites offer safety checks, often at a low price, which allow you to ride with peace of mind. A prevented breakdown is often a prevented accident. A well-maintained e-bike is above all safer, for you and for other users.

Secure your e-bike against theft

Choose a reliable bike lock: criteria and recommendations

Even among bike locks, not all are created equal, especially when it comes to an e-bike. An e-bike represents a significant investment and unfortunately attracts thieves more than a classic bike. It is therefore necessary to choose the right one (a truly deterrent and robust lock), even if it means paying a little more than expected. It is better to buy an expensive but reliable lock than a more affordable but ineffective model and have to replace your entire bike.

When it comes to bike locks, certain criteria must absolutely be taken into account:

  • The type of bike lock: U-locks remain the benchmark for resistance. Their rigid tempered steel structure offers excellent protection against theft attempts. Thick chains and folding locks can also be good options for more flexibility, provided they are of good quality.
  • Certification: opt for an anti-theft device certified SRA, ART, or FUB (Fédération des Usagers de la Bicyclette). These labels guarantee a level of resistance tested and recognized by insurers.
  • Its weight and practicality: a solid lock is often a little heavier, but it must remain manageable. A good compromise between security and ease of use is essential if you use it daily.
  • The key or code: some high-end models offer anti-copy key systems or connected locking via smartphone. These solutions are practical and further enhance security.

If possible, try to combine 2 different locks; this will surely deter thieves, who will lose time and have to use several tools if they want to steal your e-bike. It’s an extra layer of protection, and it doesn't hurt.

Properly locking your bike: good practices to adopt (wheel, frame, fixed point)

It's not enough to randomly lock your bike to secure it, because even the best lock will be useless if it's used incorrectly, and that's a common mistake that can cost you dearly. Many thefts occur not because of a fragile lock but because the bike was locked too quickly or in the wrong place. Here's what you can do:

  • Always attach the frame and a wheel to a fixed and sturdy point (sealed post, bike rack, metal barrier). Never settle for attaching only the front wheel: that's the first thing thieves detach.

  • Avoid mobile or fragile points, such as fences, removable panels, or thin railings, as they can be cut or moved in seconds.

  • Lock your bike in a busy and well-lit area: thieves naturally prefer more isolated and darker areas.

  • Place the lock as high as possible, without direct contact with the ground, to make cutting attempts more complicated.

  • Remove detachable accessories (battery, screen, pannier, odometer) every time you park, even for a short period.

By following these simple steps, you can drastically reduce the risk of theft. And above all, you gain peace of mind when you leave your e-bike parked, no matter how long it's left.

Add layers of protection: removable battery, GPS tracker, Bicycode marking...

Some e-bikes now incorporate options designed to enhance their own security or your peace of mind. A removable battery, which you can easily remove yourself to avoid any unpleasant surprises, an integrated GPS tracker that allows you to geolocate your bike in real time and receive security alerts, an alarm or even a Bicycode marking (a unique code specific to each bike), which officially links your e-bike to its owner.

These devices are effective solutions to prevent theft and protect your e-bike daily. At Ultima, we offer them on our models because your security is our priority! We want you to enjoy your e-bike with complete peace of mind. That's why we attach great importance to your overall safety, whether it's fighting theft, avoiding accidents, or limiting the risk of breakdowns.

That's why we provide you with a dedicated app (available on the App Store or Play Store) after purchasing an Ultima bike. It allows you to benefit from our advanced security features and a better experience with our bikes (mileage, travel time, CO2 saved, etc.), plus a two-year trial period for complete peace of mind.

Insurance and procedures after theft: what to do if theft still occurs?

Unfortunately, even with all possible precautions taken to enhance your bike's security, zero risk doesn't exist. In case of theft, reacting quickly will increase your chances of recovering it and simplify your procedures.

  • File a complaint immediately

Go directly to the police station or file a pre-complaint online. Once there, bring all necessary documents to identify your bike (serial number, Bicycode marking, photo of your bike, purchase invoice). From the Ultima app, you can immediately report the theft of your bike and locate it in just a few clicks!

  • Activate your bike's tracking tools

By sharing your bike's location with the authorities, you will have a much better chance of recovering it.

  • Contact your insurance as soon as possible

Don't wait and notify your insurance if you have one. Depending on the terms of your contract, you may be covered by several things (bike insurance, liability or home insurance, additional warranty, etc.).

  • Share information about your bike's theft

Post photos of your bike to community groups on social media and keep an eye out for ads on resale platforms. Even if the chances remain slim, it still increases your probabilities of finding it if someone spots it.
